Fourth: the hadith of Abū Hurayrah:
Muslim (7/175), al-Nasāʾī in al-Kubrā (8343), Ibn Ḥibbān (7286), ʿAbd al-Razzāq (19910), and Aḥmad (2/267) narrated it through al-Zuhrī, from Abū Salamah and ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from him, with this wording.
Al-Bukhārī included in al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (7/299) both the previously mentioned hadith of Abū Usayd and this hadith of Abū Hurayrah, each through Abū Salamah. He then said: “The first is more authentic”—meaning, the hadith of Abū Usayd. And Allah knows best.
Note: In al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (7/288–289), al-Bukhārī mentioned, under the biographical entry for “Mūsā ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Ḥarām al-Najjārī al-Anṣārī, one of Banu Dīnār, narrating from his father, from the Prophet,” the following: “The best of the Anṣār clans are Banu al-Najjār ...” Ibn Abī Uways narrated from him.
Despite my research, I was unable to find it narrated from him with a continuous chain.
Al-Bukhārī, may Allah have mercy on him, also said elsewhere in his Tārīkh (6/352):
“Ibrāhīm ibn Ḥamzah narrated to us: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī narrated to us: Ibn ʿAbbās reported that the Prophet said: ‘The best of the Anṣār clans are Bani (sic) ʿAbd al-Ashhal ...’ Abū Usayd then said: ‘I heard the Prophet say: “The best of the Anṣār clans are Bani (sic) al-Najjār ...”’ And this is more authentic.”
The aforementioned Ibrāhīm ibn Ḥamzah was one of al-Bukhārī’s teachers, as stated in Tahdhīb al-Kamāl (2/77), and he was a truthful narrator.
