Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

and Abu Ya‘la (1/255), through Isra’il from al-Suddi, who said: I asked Murrah al-Hamdani about Allah’s saying: “There is none of you but will come to it. This is, upon your Lord, an inevitable decree.” He related to me that ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud informed them that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. He then mentioned the hadith.

The first addition is found in Ahmad and Abu Ya‘la, and the second in al-Tirmidhi and Abu Ya‘la. Al-Darimi and Ahmad have the wording: “away from it.”

Al-Tirmidhi said: “A good hadith.”

Al-Hakim said: “Authentic according to Muslim’s criteria,” and al-Dhahabi agreed with him.

I say: It is as they said. Perhaps al-Tirmidhi’s limiting himself to this was only because Shu‘bah narrated it from al-Suddi through this chain as a report attributed to the Companion. Al-Tirmidhi recorded it. However, Imam Ahmad said (1/433): ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us from Shu‘bah, from al-Suddi, from Murrah, from ‘Abd Allah, who said concerning: “There is none of you but will come to it”: “They will enter it, or pass into it, then depart from it according to their deeds.” I said to him: “Did Isra’il narrate it from him as being from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him?” He replied: “Yes, it is from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,” or words to that effect.

Al-Tirmidhi also recorded it through this route, except that he said: “Shu‘bah said: ‘I heard it from al-Suddi as attributed to the Prophet, but I deliberately omit this attribution.’”

It is thus established that the hadith is attributed to the Prophet, and Shu‘bah’s omitting its attribution does not undermine it, since his teacher, al-Suddi,
