ʿAbd al-Malik—who said: Zakariyya ibn ʿAdi narrated to us; Abu Muʿawiyah narrated to us, from ʿAsim al-Ahwal, from Abu ʿUthman, from Salman, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “...” and then cited it.
I say: The narrators in this chain are all reliable, except Yusuf ibn ʿAbd al-Malik al-Wasiti al-Daqiqi, for whom no biographical entry is found in the works of narrator criticism and accreditation. Al-Mundhiri alluded to this when he said in al-Targhib (2/254/3):
“Al-Tabarani narrated it with a chain that is open to question.”
Al-Haythami clarified this, saying (10/96):
“Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsat. It contains Yusuf ibn ʿAbd al-Malik al-Wasiti, whom I did not recognize; the rest of its narrators are reliable.”
I say: Bahshal narrated from him in Tarikh Wasit (pp. 109 and 236), so his report is suitable for corroboration (1). Al-Mundhiri further supported this hadith by saying:
“Abu al-Shaykh Ibn Hayyan also narrated, through the route of ʿAtiyyah, from Abu Saʿid in a report attributed to the Prophet: ‘When the servant says, “Praise be to Allah abundantly,” Allah Most High says, “Write down abundant mercy for My servant.”’ ...”
How far afield he has gone! For Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it through the route just mentioned in al-Musannaf (10/295/9484), as did al-Tabarani in al-Duʿaʾ (3/1562/1685).
ʿAtiyyah is al-ʿAwfi, who is weak, as is well known.
