They repeated the question to him two or three times, and each time he said:
“You cannot manage it.”
The third time, he said:
“The one striving in Allah’s path is like one who fasts, stands in prayer, and devoutly observes Allah’s verses, never slackening in fasting or prayer until the one striving in Allah’s path returns.”
Reported by Muslim and others; it was previously referenced under no. 2896. *
3451—“Rejoice, rejoice! Whoever performs the five prayers and avoids the major sins will enter Paradise through whichever of its gates he wishes: undutifulness to parents, associationism with Allah, killing a soul, falsely accusing chaste women, consuming an orphan’s property, fleeing from the battlefield, and consuming ribā.”
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (13/8–9/3) through several routes from ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Muhammad, from Muslim ibn al-Walid ibn Rabah, from al-Muttalib ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Hantab, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr, who said:
The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, ascended the pulpit and said:
“Indeed, I swear; indeed, I swear; indeed, I swear.”
Then he descended and said: ... and he mentioned the hadith, adding after the words concerning Paradise:
Al-Muttalib said: I heard a man ask ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr, “Did you hear the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, mention them?” He replied, “Yes: undutifulness to parents ... and so on.”
