al-Talkhis (p. 275):
“Ibn al-Jawzi went too far in including this hadith in al-Mawdu‘at (Fabricated Hadiths). It seems that he was led to do so because he considered it contrary to the condition in which the Prophet died, for he was provided for.”
Al-Bayhaqi said:
“In my view, its meaning is that he did not ask for the state of poverty whose meaning is paucity; rather, he asked for the poverty whose meaning is humble submission and humility.”
309 — “O company of the Emigrants and the Helpers, among your brethren are people who have neither wealth nor clan. Therefore, let each of you take in two or three men.”
Abu Dawud (2534) recorded it from al-Aswad ibn Qays, from Nubayh al-‘Anazi, from Jabir ibn ‘Abd Allah, who related from the Messenger of Allah that when he wished to set out on a military expedition, he said this.
Jabir said:
“None of us had a mount to carry him except for a turn equivalent to the turn of one of us. So I took in two or three men. I had only a turn on my camel equivalent to the turn of one of them.”
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission. All its narrators are trustworthy, apart from al-Aswad ibn Qays, whom Abu Zur‘ah, al-‘Ijli, and Ibn Hibban declared trustworthy. Al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Hibban, and al-Hakim authenticated reports of his. Therefore, after this, it does not harm him that ‘Ali ibn al-Madini mentioned him among the unknown narrators from whom al-Aswad ibn Qays narrates.
