al-Kabir (17/318/882), through several chains from al-Layth, from al-Harith ibn Yaʿqub, from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Shumasah:
Faqim al-Lakhmi said to ʿUqbah ibn ʿAmir, “You keep going back and forth between these two targets, though you are elderly and it is difficult for you!” ʿUqbah replied, “Had it not been for something I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, I would not have persisted in it.” Al-Harith said: I asked Ibn Shumasah, “What was that?” He replied, “He said: …” and then mentioned the hadith. Muslim’s version supplies the wording.
Ibn Lahiʿah also corroborated him from al-Harith ibn Yaʿqub with the same narration. Ibn ʿAbd al-Hakam recorded it in Futuh Misr (p. 292).
The wording, “… or he has disobeyed,” does not occur in the narrations of Abu ʿAwanah or al-Tabarani.
Al-Hafiz did not mention it in al-Talkhis al-Habir (4/166) when discussing this hadith, although he attributed it to Muslim. Perhaps this indicates that he regarded the first wording as preferable: “He is not one of us,” without the uncertainty. And Allah knows best.
3449 — “If you wish to go on campaign, buy a jet-black horse with a white blaze and white leg markings, with its right hind leg unmarked; for you will gain spoils and remain safe.”
Al-Hakim (2/92) and al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (17/293/809) recorded it through ʿUbayd ibn al-Sabbah, who said: Musa ibn ʿAli ibn Rabah informed us, from his father, from ʿUqbah ibn ʿAmir, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: … and he mentioned it. Al-Hakim said:
