“Musa ibn Ismaʿil and the people of his town narrated from him.”
Al-Bukhari said in al-Tarikh:
“... Musa ibn Ismaʿil, and Muslim.”
Apparently, he meant Muslim al-Farahidi, for he too was from his town, Basra.
Al-Mundhiri did not know him, and so said in al-Targhib (1/211/15):
“Al-Bayhaqi recorded it, but I do not presently have its chain of transmission before me!” *
3445—(Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise more spacious than it.)
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (8/267–268/7889), through the route of ʿUthman ibn Abi al-ʿAtikah, from ʿAli ibn Yazid, from al-Qasim, from Abu Umamah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: ... and he mentioned it.
I say: This is a very weak chain of transmission. ʿAli ibn Yazid—who is al-Alhani—is weak.
As for ʿUthman ibn Abi al-ʿAtikah, he was truthful, but they considered him weak in his narrations from this al-Alhani, as al-Hafiz stated in al-Taqrib.
However, it has two corroborating reports: one from the hadith of Abdullah ibn Amr and the other from Asmaʾ bint Yazid ibn al-Sakan.
As for the hadith of Ibn Amr, al-Hajjaj narrates it from Amr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, from the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, with this wording.
Ahmad recorded it (2/221).
Its narrators are trustworthy, so its chain is good, were it not for al-Hajjaj—namely Ibn Artah—who practised tadlis;
