from every direction. If this one misses him, that one strikes him. The square is the appointed term [encompassing him], and the line extending beyond it is hope.”
It was recorded by al-Bukhari (6417), Ibn Majah (4231)—the wording is his—and Ahmad (1/385).
Note: Al-Hafiz mentioned five depictions of the diagram; the one that appears closest to correct to me is the following:
The encompassing appointed term
—
The appointed term The appointed term
—
Hope
The appointed term — contingencies — the appointed term
—
Al-Tirmidhi (2870) and Ibn Abi al-Dunya (32/12) also narrated it, in abbreviated form, through Bishr ibn al-Muhajir, from Abd Allah ibn Buraydah, from his father:
“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took two pebbles and threw them, saying: ‘This is the appointed term, and that is hope.’”
Al-Tirmidhi said: “A good, uncommon hadith through this route.”
I say: Bishr is weak in hadith transmission, as al-Hafiz stated. Al-Mundhiri indicated that it is strengthened; apparently, this is due to its supporting reports.
