“I was among the people of the Ṣuffah. I saw us when not one of us had a complete garment to wear, and the sweat on our skin had mingled with dust and grime (1). Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came out to us and said:
‘Let the poor Emigrants rejoice.’
Then a man in fine attire approached. Whenever the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, spoke, the man felt compelled to come out with words that surpassed those of the Prophet! When the man departed, he said: …” And he then cited it.
Abū Nuʿaym also transmitted the first part of it in Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ (2/21–22), up to the statement of glad tidings; and al-Bayhaqī transmitted what follows it in Shuʿab al-Īmān (4/251/4973).
I say: Its chain of transmission is authentic; its narrators are trustworthy and are among al-Bukhārī’s narrators. Al-Mundhirī said in al-Targhīb (4/93/41):
“Al-Ṭabarānī transmitted it through several chains, and the narrators of one of them are narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ.”
Al-Haythamī’s statement (10/261) is similar:
“Al-Ṭabarānī transmitted it through several chains, and the narrators of one of them are narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ.”
Their saying, “through several chains,” is misleading; rather, they are only two routes from Ṣadaqah ibn Khālid, as mentioned above. *
3427—“The soundness of the first part of this ummah lies in asceticism and certainty, while its latter part will perish through miserliness and long hopes.”
It was recorded by Aḥmad in al-Zuhd (p. 10), al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ (8/316/7646), Ibn ʿAdī in al-Kāmil (6/127), and al-Bayhaqī in al-Shuʿab
