It is further supported by the general import of the Prophet’s statement, peace and blessings be upon him, in the hadith of Thabit ibn al-Dahhak:
“Whoever kills himself with something will be punished with it on the Day of Resurrection.”
It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim, as well as others, in one wording: al-Bukhari (6047, 6105, and 6652), Muslim (1/73), Abu Awanah (1/45), and al-Tirmidhi (2636), whose wording is:
“Allah will punish him with that by which he killed himself ...”
He said: “It is a good, authentic hadith.”
Al-Bukhari and Muslim, as well as others, also narrated it in other wordings, some of which I have cited in al-Irwa’ (8/201/2575).
Two observations:
The first: It appears that the error al-Mundhiri made in attributing the hadith to al-Bukhari was also made by others, such as al-Haythami. For he did not include it in Majma’ al-Zawa’id or in Mawarid al-Zam’an ila Zawa’id Ibn Hibban. This can only have been because he thought that it was in al-Bukhari, as al-Mundhiri stated. Accordingly, it would not qualify as a supplementary report. Thus, the addition escaped his notice, just as it escaped Shaykh al-Naji, who noticed al-Mundhiri’s error but did not notice that the addition is established in al-Musnad; otherwise, he would have attributed it to it rather than remaining silent. This is why this hadith was among those I added in my book Sahih Mawarid al-Zam’an. May Allah Most High facilitate its printing and publication.
Something similar was done by the commentator on al-Ihsan (13/328, al-Mu’assasah edition): he attributed it to al-Bukhari without explaining that the addition is not found there. He repeated the error in his commentary on Mushkil al-Athar (1/183/195, al-Mu’assasah edition), likewise failing to explain the difference between his version
