The first is narrated by ʿUbādah ibn al-Walīd ibn ʿUbādah, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: … then he mentioned it, without the addition contained within the brackets.
It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (7199 and 7200), in abridged form; Muslim (6/16); Abū ʿAwānah (4/454)—the wording is that of the latter two; Ibn Ḥibbān (7/39–40/4530); al-Nasāʾī (2/180–181); Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in al-Sunnah (2/494–495/102–1032); al-Bayhaqī in al-Sunan (8/145 and 10/158); Ibn Abī Shaybah in al-Muṣannaf (15/57/19104); al-Ḥumaydī in his Musnad (192/389); and Aḥmad (5/314, 316, and 319).
Some of them—notably Ibn Ḥibbān—did not mention al-Walīd ibn ʿUbādah in the chain of transmission, but instead stated:
“ʿUbādah ibn al-Walīd heard from ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit.”
The other chain is narrated by Junādah ibn Abī Umayyah from ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit, with a similarly abridged wording, though it includes the addition.
It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (7055 and 7056); Muslim (6/16–17); Abū ʿAwānah (4/456); Ibn Ḥibbān (7/45/4543); Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim (2/492/1026, 493/1028, and 495/1033 and 1034); Ibn Abī Shaybah (no. 19105); Aḥmad (5/321); and al-Bayhaqī (8/145), through several routes from him.
Al-Bazzār also recorded it in al-Baḥr al-Zakhkhār (7/143–144/2698–2700) through both chains.
The reason that prompted me to document this hadith and trace it through these many sources—sources which one seldom finds gathered together in a single book—was that I saw al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Mundhirī cite the hadith
