Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

al-Ṭabarānī al-Tustarī—namely Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Zuhayr al-Tustarī, who is known by his grandfather’s name—was a trustworthy ḥāfiẓ. He is biographed in Tadhkirat al-Ḥuffāẓ and elsewhere.

And ʿUbayd Allah ibn Saʿd: he is the son of Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf al-Zuhrī. All of them are among al-Bukhārī’s narrators, some narrating from others, except that Saʿd, ʿUbayd Allah’s father, was narrated from by al-Bukhārī only in conjunction with another narrator. The phrase, “My father related to me,” was originally, “My uncle related to me.” I consider it highly likely that the wording, “my uncle,” is an error on the part of the copyist or printer, for none of those who biographed this Saʿd mentioned that he narrated from his uncle. Rather, they stated that he narrated from his father, Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm. What further confirmed this error for me is that this Ibrāhīm is the one whom al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Mizzī listed among the narrators from Ṣāliḥ ibn Kaysān, his shaykh in this hadith, and he mentioned no one else from the Zuhrī family.

This is the conclusion to which my independent reasoning, research, and verification have led me. If I am correct, it is from Allah; and if I am mistaken, it is from myself. I seek His forgiveness for my sin, whether inadvertent or deliberate, for all of it is my responsibility.

What prompted me to trace the hadith was that I had previously traced it in Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl (1/68–70/33) and Ghāyat al-Marām (90/116), through the narration of Muslim and others, with the addition enclosed in brackets but without the exception. Yet al-Suyūṭī had included the hadith in al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr through Muslim’s narration, attributing the exception to al-Ṭabarānī. When I compiled Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ, I cited beneath it the two sources mentioned above. Now, as I am reviewing the hadiths of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Targhīb in preparation for republishing its first volume with a new and highly beneficial critical edition, together with the printing of the remainder, this required me to consult the two sources indicated. When I found in neither of them any tracing—or even any mention—of this exception, I hastened to trace it now. Most likely, the reason I did not trace it previously was that the volume containing Umm Salamah’s hadiths was not
