the freedman of Ghifrah), and I thought that it had been omitted by the printer. I therefore returned to Jāmiʿ al-Masānīd of Ibn Kathīr, under the entry “Mujāhid from Abū Dharr” (13/768), but did not find it there either. It thus appears that it had also been omitted from that work. I then returned to Aṭrāf al-Musnad of Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī (6/185/8071), where I found it exactly as it appears in the Musnad. It therefore seems more likely to me that this was an early omission, possibly made by one of the copyists, or by ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Muʾammal himself: at times he included it, and at other times he omitted it. This further confirms his weakness. And Allah knows best.
However, I saw that al-Haythamī said in al-Majmaʿ (2/228):
“Aḥmad and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Awsaṭ narrated it. Its chain includes ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Muʾammal al-Makhzūmī, whom Aḥmad and others deemed weak. Ibn Maʿīn declared him trustworthy in one report, as did Ibn Ḥibbān, though Ibn Ḥibbān said: ‘He errs.’ The remaining narrators in Aḥmad’s chain are narrators of the authentic collections.”
I say: al-Haythamī did not distinguish between Aḥmad’s and al-Ṭabarānī’s versions. Either their versions are identical, such that the first contains what the other contains—namely, the established mention of Ḥumayd in the chain of transmission—in which case al-Haythamī’s copy of the Musnad differs from the copy used by al-Ḥāfiẓ in al-Aṭrāf; or else he treated the Musnad’s version as equivalent to al-Ṭabarānī’s version despite the omission it contains, doing so either out of leniency or oversight. The latter is more likely. And Allah knows best. *
The Prophet’s Generosity and Excellent Repayment—may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him
- “Half is repayment to you, and half is a gift from me to you.”
Al-Bayhaqī narrated it in al-Sunan (5/351) and Shuʿab al-Īmān (7/531/11237), through two chains from Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Būshanjī, Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm, who said: Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Farrāʾ narrated to us.
