and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ (1/468/851), from Sunayd ibn Sulaymān. All three narrated from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Muʾammal, from Ḥumayd, the freedman of ʿAfrāʾ, from Qays ibn Saʿd, from Mujāhid, from Abū Dharr:
that he took hold of the ring of the door of the Kaʿbah and said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: ...” Then he cited it. Al-Ṭabarānī said:
“No one narrated it from Qays ibn Saʿd except Ḥumayd ibn Qays al-Aʿraj; ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Muʾammal al-Makhzūmī was alone in narrating it!”
That is what he said! Yet he was corroborated, as will follow; so wait and see.
Sāʿīd ibn Sālim al-Qaddāḥ differed from these three, narrating: from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Muʾammal, from Ḥumayd, the freedman of ʿAfrāʾ, from Mujāhid, with the same wording, but omitting Qays ibn Saʿd.
Ibn Khuzaymah included it in his Ṣaḥīḥ (4/226/2748), as did Ibn ʿAdī in al-Kāmil (4/137). Ibn Khuzaymah said:
“I doubt that Mujāhid heard from Abū Dharr.”
I say: Perhaps the basis for this doubt is what Ibn ʿAdī narrated (7/289), and through his route al-Bayhaqī: Muḥammad ibn Yūnus al-ʿUṣfurī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Ḥarashī narrated to us; al-Yasaʿ ibn Ṭalḥah al-Qurashī—a Meccan—told me: “I heard Mujāhid say: ‘It reached us that Abū Dharr said ...’” He then cited the hadith in a highly abridged form, with the wording:
“There is no prayer after the afternoon prayer except in Mecca.”
However, this al-Yasaʿ ibn Ṭalḥah is very weak. Al-Bukhārī and Abū Zurʿah said:
“His hadith are rejected.”
