They said, “How so, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “A person’s wealth is only what he has sent ahead, while his heir’s wealth is what he leaves behind.”
The wording is that of Abū Yaʿlā, and it is more complete.
I then reconsidered and said:
Abū Yaʿlā only cited this immediately after the hadith under discussion, with a single chain of transmission. Rather, it was al-Bukhārī who added it at its beginning, as I have mentioned. This portion of it was recorded by him in his Ṣaḥīḥ (6442) in abbreviated form, through the previously mentioned chain of al-Aʿmash. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Fatḥ (11/260):
“Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr also recorded it from Abū Muʿāwiyah, from al-Aʿmash, with both its chain and text, adding at its end: ‘Whom do you consider the wrestler among yourselves? …’ the hadith. He also added: ‘Whom do you consider the childless one among yourselves? …’ the hadith.”
I say: It would have been more appropriate for al-Ḥāfiẓ to attribute it also to al-Bukhārī in al-Adab al-Mufrad. Indeed, attributing it there is all the more warranted, as is clear to those possessed of knowledge and sound understanding. Yet exalted is He from whom nothing is hidden, whether on earth or in heaven.
The documentation of this addition has preceded in this book (no. 1486). *
3407—(A man entered Paradise and saw written on its gate: “Charity is rewarded tenfold, and a loan eighteenfold.”)
Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (8/297/7976), and al-Bayhaqī in al-Shuʿab (3/284/3564), through two routes from Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us from ʿUtbah ibn Ḥumayd, from al-Qāsim, from Abū Umāmah, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: … and he then cited it.
