Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

because it agrees with Ahmad’s version in al-Musnad (4/239–240), to which al-Mundhirī referred. Ibn Ḥibbān’s version (48/79), through ʿĀṣim, from Zirr, from Ṣafwān, is likewise similar in wording.

It was corroborated by ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Bakht, from Zirr, with similar wording. Al-Ḥākim recorded it and declared it authentic, and al-Dhahabī agreed with him.

The report concerning the prescribed time limit for wiping over leather socks is well known in the Sunan collections through ʿĀṣim, and has been documented in al-Irwāʾ (1/140–141).

Furthermore, al-Haythamī said of the hadith in al-Majmaʿ (1/131):

“Al-Ṭabarānī transmitted it in al-Kabīr, and its narrators are those of the authentic collections.”

There is another hadith resembling this one, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, concerning exhorting and welcoming the seeker of knowledge. Its documentation has previously appeared under no. 280. *

  1. “Whoever performs minor ablution and performs it well, then stands and prays two rakʿahs—or four; Sahl was uncertain—observing devotional remembrance and reverent humility well therein, then seeks Allah’s forgiveness, will be forgiven.”

Ahmad transmitted it in al-Musnad (6/450): Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik narrated to us: Sahl ibn Abī Ṣadaqah told me: Kathīr ibn al-Faḍl al-Ṭafāwī told me: Yūsuf ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām told me:

“I came to Abū al-Dardāʾ during the illness in which he died, and he said to me: ‘My nephew, what is your purpose in coming to this town—or what has brought you here?’ I said: ‘Nothing except to maintain the bond that existed between you and my father, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām.’ Abū al-Dardāʾ said: ‘What an evil moment this is for lying! I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say …’” Then he mentioned it.
