Ibn Sahl said: Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿīd al-Jawharī narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Rabīʿah al-Kilābī narrated to us from ʿUthmān ibn Wāqid, from Muslim (!) ibn Yasār, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ... and he then cited it.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. All its narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators covered in al-Tahdhīb. There is some criticism concerning some of them, but it is not detrimental—apart from al-Ṭabarānī’s shaykh, who was Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī, as appears in the first of the hadiths which al-Ṭabarānī related through him in his al-Awsaṭ (8367). Al-Dāraquṭnī said of him: “Trustworthy,” as stated in his biography in Tārīkh Baghdād (13/56–57). This escaped Shaykh al-Haythamī, who said (6/255):
“Al-Ṭabarānī related it in al-Awsaṭ from his shaykh Mūsā ibn Sahl, whom I do not recognise; the rest of its narrators are trustworthy!”
Note: The Successor narrator in this hadith is given as Muslim ibn Yasār in the printed edition of al-Awsaṭ. I think the correct reading is Mūsā ibn Yasār, for it is he whom they mention among the shaykhs of ʿUthmān ibn Wāqid and among those who narrated from Abū Hurayrah, not Muslim ibn Yasār. Both, however, were trustworthy Successors. The same reading also appears in the photographic copy in my possession. Al-Ṭabarānī said after the hadith: “No one narrated it from Muslim ibn Yasār except ʿUthmān ibn Wāqid; Muḥammad ibn Rabīʿah alone narrated it from him.”
And Allah knows best.
- “No; rather, you spat in front of yourself while leading the people in prayer, and thus harmed Allah and His angels.”
Recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (13/43–44/104). He said: Ismāʿīl ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to us: Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us: Ibn Wahb narrated to us; he told me:
