Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in al-Thiqāt (8/362), and narrated from him in his Ṣaḥīḥ (8/142–143/6455) through one of his shaykhs. He was also a shaykh of a number of hadith scholars, such as Ibn Mājah, Ibn Jarīr, and Baḥshal al-Wāsiṭī in Tārīkh Wāsiṭ (p. 237). Thus, the chain would be authentic were it not for the fact that Khālid ibn Ḥamzah’s status is unknown to us; yet his report has been corroborated. Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ said: I heard Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī relate that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“A man’s record will be raised on the Day of Resurrection, and the wrongs he committed against others will continue to pursue him …”
He then mentioned a shortened version of the hadith. He said:
“I said to him—or ʿĀṣim said to him—‘From whom, Abū ʿUthmān?!’ He replied, ‘From Salmān, Saʿd, and Ibn Masʿūd,’ until he had counted six or seven of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.”
Shuʿbah said: “I asked ʿĀṣim about this hadith, and he related it to me from Abū ʿUthmān, from Salmān. ʿUthmān ibn ʿAttāb also informed me that he heard Abū ʿUthmān relate this from Salmān and the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.”
Al-Ḥākim recorded it (4/574) and said:
“Authentic according to the conditions of the two shaykhs.”
Al-Dhahabī agreed with him!
I say: It only meets Muslim’s condition, since Abū Dāwūd—the narrator from Shuʿbah, namely al-Ṭayālisī—was cited by al-Bukhārī only in suspended form.
This version recorded by al-Ḥākim was overlooked by al-Mundhirī. In al-Targhīb (3/145/13), he cited it through Abū ʿUthmān, from Salmān al-Fārisī and Saʿd, and so on. They said: “On the Day of Resurrection, a man’s record will not be raised before him until he sees that he is saved; then the wrongs he committed against others will continue …” Thus, he cited it as attributed to the Companions. He said:
“Al-Bayhaqī narrated it in al-Baʿth, and its chain is good.”
