This is another point of discrepancy: Mūsā al-Juhanī was Ibn ʿAbd Allāh—or, it is said, Ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—Abū Salamah; and it is also said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Kūfī. He was therefore someone other than Mūsā al-Ṣaghīr. Yet they mentioned that he narrated from ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah, and that Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated from him!
Abū Nuʿaym recorded it in al-Ḥilyah (4/269), through Ibn Abī Shaybah, Aḥmad, and others, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr, who both narrated from Mūsā ibn Muslim, with the same report. He said: “It is singular among the narrations of ʿAwn; Mūsā alone transmitted it from him. He was Abū ʿĪsā Mūsā ibn Muslim al-Ṭaḥḥān, known as al-Ṣaghīr.”
I say: Thus, the occurrence of “Mūsā al-Juhanī” in al-Ṭabarānī’s narration is anomalous, since it contradicts what appears in al-Muṣannaf, this narration of Abū Nuʿaym, and Aḥmad’s narration as well. Allah knows best.
There is an even more serious discrepancy, which led to the hadith being graded weak. Al-Ḥākim recorded it (1/500): ʿAlī ibn Ḥamshādh al-ʿAdl narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā ibn al-Sakan narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Mūsā ibn Sālim narrated to us from ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah, from his father, with the same report. He said:
“Its chain of transmission is authentic!”
Al-Dhahabī rebutted him, saying:
“I say: As for Mūsā ibn Sālim, Abū Ḥātim said: ‘His hadith is rejected.’”
Ibn al-Mulaqqin cited this in his abridgement (1/387) and endorsed it, as was his habit! Yet, in my assessment, there are two errors here: one by al-Ḥākim and the other by al-Dhahabī.
As for the first, it is his contradiction of the preceding narrations in naming Mūsā’s father as Sālim—particularly the narration of Ibn Numayr—for al-Ḥākim narrated it through his route, as you have seen. I have only been categorical
