“He is abandoned despite his learning, for he was susceptible to prompting; indeed, Ibn Maʿīn explicitly accused him of lying.”
- As for the hadith of Abū Saʿīd, Suwār al-Ḍarīr narrates it from ʿAṭiyyah, from him, attributed to the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—with only the first clause.
Ibn ʿAdī also recorded it (3/454).
Suwār is Ibn Muṣʿab. Aḥmad and al-Dāraqutnī said: “His hadith is abandoned,” as stated in al-Mughnī.
- As for Zayd’s mursal report, Ismāʿīl ibn Rāfiʿ narrates it from him, attributed to the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—with the wording:
“Go forth on campaign, and you will be healthy and gain spoils.”
Ibn Abī Shaybah recorded it (5/349).
I say: Its narrators are trustworthy, apart from Ibn Rāfiʿ, who is weak.
In sum, Abū Hurayrah’s hadith, through its two routes and with this mursal corroboration, rises to the rank of authentic, Allah willing. Perhaps this is why al-Bayhaqī stated definitively that it is attributable to the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—following Imam al-Shāfiʿī in his book al-Umm (5/127). And Allah, Most High, knows best.

It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (4339), Ibn Mājah (4009), Ibn Ḥibbān (1839 and 1840—Mawārid), al-Ṭaḥāwī in Mushkil al-Āthār (3/421/1174), al-Bayhaqī in al-Sunan (10/91), and ʿAbd al-Razzāq in al-Muṣannaf (11/348/20723), and, through his route, Aḥmad
