- “Travel, and you will be healthy; go forth on campaign, and you will become affluent.”
It has been narrated from Abū Hurayrah, Ibn ʿUmar, Ibn ʿAbbās, Abū Saʿīd, and, in mursal form, from Zayd ibn Aslam.
- As for the hadith of Abū Hurayrah, it has two routes:
The first is from Darrāj, from Ibn Ḥujayrah, from Abū Hurayrah, who reported that the Prophet said the above. Imam Aḥmad recorded it (2/380): Qutaybah narrated to us: Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. All its narrators are trustworthy, in light of what I have established regarding the soundness of Darrāj’s narrations from Ibn Ḥujayrah in the preceding hadith (3350). Although Ibn Lahīʿah had a poor memory, his hadith is authentic when transmitted by the ʿAbādilah—the narrators named ʿAbd Allāh—and Qutaybah, namely Ibn Saʿīd, is counted among them. He said:
“Aḥmad said to me: ‘Your hadiths from Ibn Lahīʿah are authentic!’ I replied: ‘That is because we used to copy from Ibn Wahb’s book, then hear it from Ibn Lahīʿah.’”
Al-Dhahabī mentioned this in Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalāʾ (8/15). This is an important point that must be noted.
The other route is from Zuhayr ibn Muḥammad Abū al-Mundhir, from Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, from his father, from him, with the same wording, adding:
“Fast, and you will be healthy.”
Al-ʿUqaylī recorded it in al-Ḍuʿafāʾ (2/92), as did others, with a weak chain of transmission, which I had explained
