Yazīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Usāmah ibn Zayd al-Laythī and Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to me, from Muʿādh ibn Rifāʿah al-Zuraqī, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: … and he cited it. Al-Ḥākim said:
“Its chain of transmission from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh is authentic.”
Al-Dhahabī agreed with him.
I say: It is good, owing to the well-known scholarly disagreement concerning Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr—who is al-Laythī.
It also has a fuller supporting report from the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, whose sourcing was given shortly above under hadith 3345. *
3349—(“Its odor troubled me, so I stood up.” That is, it was a Jewish funeral bier.)
Ibn ʿAdī transmitted it (1/320), as did al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ (7/374–375), through Abū al-Asbāṭ al-Ḥārithī, from Ismāʿīl ibn Shurūs al-Ṣanʿānī, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās:
The funeral bier for which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stood was that of a Jew, and the Prophet said: … and he cited it.
Al-Ṭabarānī said:
“No one narrated it from Ismāʿīl ibn Shurūs except Abū al-Asbāṭ.”
I say: His name was Bishr ibn Rāfiʿ, and he was weak. Yet the real defect lies with his teacher, Ismāʿīl ibn Shurūs, for he was accused of fabricating hadith. In his biographical notice, Ibn ʿAdī cited it along with another hadith of his; I have documented it in al-Ḍaʿīfah, no. 6631, because he alone narrated it.
As for this report, al-ʿUqaylī also transmitted it (1/84/94), though without the hadith that is the subject of this entry. It seems that he thought Ismāʿīl was alone in narrating it, but this is not so. Imam Aḥmad said (1/201): ʿAbd al-Razzāq related to us: Ibn Jurayj informed us; he said: I heard Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī relate, from Ḥusayn and Ibn ʿAbbās—or from one of the two—that he said:
