“Tear it into head-coverings for the Fāṭimahs.”
Muslim transmitted it (6/142). *
3347 — “It was only the angels who were carrying it with them.” That is, the funeral bier of Saʿd ibn Muʿādh—may Allah be pleased with him.
Ibn Ḥibbān transmitted it in his Ṣaḥīḥ (9/89/6993—al-Iḥsān), saying: Al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān informed us: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʿAllāf narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Sawāʾ narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Anas:
The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, while Saʿd’s funeral bier had been set down:
“The Throne of the Most Merciful shook for it.”
The hypocrites then began commenting on his funeral procession, saying, “How light it is!” This reached the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—so he said: … and he then mentioned it.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. All its narrators are well-known and trustworthy, apart from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʿAllāf. Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in al-Thiqāt on account of his narrations from Muḥammad ibn Sawāʾ and Abū ʿĀṣim, and said (9/89):
“Al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān narrated to us from him.”
I say: Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim also narrated from him, as will follow, as did Ibn Abī Dāwūd—the hadith master, son of a hadith master—as cited in Sharḥ Maʿānī al-Āthār (2/343). Such a narrator is deemed truthful, and his hadith is good, especially in corroborating reports. Ibn Ḥibbān also transmitted through him, with this chain from Anas, another hadith concerning Saʿd’s handkerchiefs in Paradise. Its documentation preceded in the hadith immediately before this one, but Saʿīd occurs in it in place of Shuʿbah; and Saʿīd is the correct reading, as will follow. He likewise recorded from him (5720),
