with regard to them and treats them well, without entering Paradise.”

Al-Tirmidhī also transmitted it (1/349) through ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak: Ibn ʿUyaynah informed us, from Sahl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, from Ayyūb ibn Bashīr, from Saʿīd al-Aʿshā, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording:

“Whoever has three daughters, or ...” the hadith, with wording similar to that of Aḥmad.

Ibn Ḥibbān likewise transmitted it (2044) through Ibrāhīm ibn Bashshār al-Ramadī: Sufyān narrated to us likewise. Some typographical errors occurred in its chain of transmission.

This is a remarkably severe inconsistency: in the first narration, Saʿīd al-Aʿshā appears as the teacher of Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ and the narrator from Ayyūb ibn Bashīr; yet in the other narration, he appears as the teacher of Ayyūb ibn Bashīr and the narrator from Abū Saʿīd. Moreover, Saʿīd himself is unknown; no one declared him trustworthy apart from Ibn Ḥibbān. For this reason, al-Tirmidhī deemed it weak, saying:

“A singular hadith.”

295 — “Whoever has three daughters or three sisters, fears Allah, and supports them shall be with me in Paradise like this”—and he gestured with his index and middle fingers.

Abū Yaʿlā transmitted it in his Musnad (170/1): Shaybān narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ziyād al-Burjumī narrated to us; Thābit narrated to us, from Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he then cited it.

I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission. Its narrators are trustworthy and are narrators of the two Ṣaḥīḥs, apart from Muḥammad ibn Ziyād al-Burjumī, who is trustworthy,
