is weak; nevertheless, al-Dāraquṭnī’s aforementioned statement suggests that the weak report has a corroborating route. The same is indicated by al-Bukhārī’s preceding statement, for he stated definitively that Qatādah and al-Zuhrī heard it from Anas. Yet al-Ṭabarānī’s report employs the non-explicit “from” formula, as does Tamām’s report, which al-Ḥāfiẓ paired with it. However, I consulted Fawāʾid Tamām through al-Rawḍ al-Bassām (4/325–326/1500 and 1501), and found that he had also transmitted it by another route. In each of the two, al-Zuhrī explicitly states that he heard it directly; but both are weak, as its distinguished editor, Abū Sulaymān al-Dawsarī—may Allah reward him well—has shown.
It seems that al-Bukhārī eventually returned to indicating its weakness in the chapter referred to above, when he said at its beginning:
“It is reported concerning this from al-Zubaydī, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas, from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ inclined to this view in Taghlīq al-Taʿlīq (5/62). The preceding routes from Anas are sufficient and make this route unnecessary. And Allah knows best.
Moreover, the hadith under discussion has a corroborating report in the hadith of al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, who said:
“A silk garment was presented as a gift to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and his Companions began touching it and marveling at its softness. He then said: ...” And he then mentioned it.
It was transmitted by al-Bukhārī (3249, 3802, 5836, and 6640), Muslim (7/150–151), al-Tirmidhī (3846), Ibn Mājah (157), Ibn Ḥibbān (9/90/6996 and 6997—al-Iḥsān), Aḥmad (4/130 and 230), and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (6/15/5348), through Sufyān, Shuʿbah, and others, from Abū Isḥāq, from him. Al-Tirmidhī said:
“A good, authentic hadith.”
The wording concerning the gift is narrated by Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Ḥanafī from ʿAlī:
“Ukaydir of Dūmah presented the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) with a silk garment, and he gave it to ʿAlī, saying:”
