“A brocade garment was presented to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) ...”—the hadith, but without the clause.
Al-Ṭabarānī transmitted it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (6/15/5347) through Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Zīrīq: ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sālim narrated to us from al-Zubaydī, from al-Zuhrī.
Al-Bukhārī cited it in suspended form after the hadith of al-Barāʾ, which will be mentioned below, saying (3802):
“Qatādah and al-Zuhrī narrated it; both heard it from Anas, from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ said (7/123)—and al-ʿAynī followed him in al-ʿUmda (16/267):
“As for Qatādah’s report, the author gives it with a complete chain in the Book of Gifts; and as for al-Zuhrī’s report, he gives it with a complete chain in the Book of Dress.”
I say: Qatādah’s report is the one previously cited through Shaybān from him.
As for al-Zuhrī’s report, al-Bukhārī did not give it with a complete chain. Rather, he also cited it in suspended form in the Book of Dress, saying under (26—Chapter: Touching Silk without Wearing It):
“It is also narrated therein from al-Zubaydī, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas, from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).”
Thus, al-Ḥāfiẓ’s statement, “he gives it with a complete chain in the Book of Dress,” is mistaken (1), perhaps owing to a slip of the pen. The correct wording is: “Its connected version will be given in the Book of Dress.” For al-Ḥāfiẓ himself supplied its connected chain there through the above-mentioned report of al-Ṭabarānī, and commented on it (10/291):
“Al-Dāraquṭnī said in al-Afrād: ‘No one narrated it from al-Zubaydī except ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sālim.’”
I say: He is Abū Yūsuf al-Ḥimṣī, trustworthy and one of al-Bukhārī’s narrators, but the chain of transmission to him
