that Ukaidir of Dūmah sent the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) a robe of fine silk. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) wore it, and the people marvelled at it. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) then said: “...” and cited it.
He then gave it to ʿUmar, who said, “O Messenger of Allah, you disapprove of it, yet you give it to me to wear?!” He replied:
“O ʿUmar, I sent it to you only so that you might send it on to someone and obtain some money for it.” This was before silk was prohibited.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission; all its narrators are trustworthy according to Muslim’s criteria.
Muslim also transmitted it in his Ṣaḥīḥ (7/151), following the forthcoming hadith of Shaybān from Qatādah. He said: Muḥammad ibn Bashshār narrated to us: Sālim ibn Nūḥ narrated to us, with this chain. However, he did not give its wording in full, but merely said:
“He mentioned something similar,”
and did not include in it: “And he used to forbid silk.”
The hadith has also been transmitted from Qatādah through other routes, in separate portions.
The first: through Shaybān from him, containing its first half, but without the clause concerning the gift and without mention of Ukaidir of Dūmah; and he added:
“And he used to forbid silk.”
It was transmitted by al-Bukhārī (2615 and 3248), Muslim (7/151), Abū Yaʿlā (5/423/3112), and ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd in al-Muntakhab (3/101/1198).
The second: Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah from him, containing the first half.
It was transmitted by Aḥmad (3/206–207 and 234), Ibn Ḥibbān (9/91/6999), and al-Ṭaḥāwī (2/343).
