“Take him to your quarters, al-ʿAbbās, and bring him to me in the morning.”
So I took him to my quarters, and he spent the night with me. When morning came, I took him to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw him, he said:
“Woe to you, Abū Sufyān! Has the time not yet come for you to know that there is no god worthy of worship but Allah?”
He said, “May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! How generous, forbearing, and mindful of kinship ties you are! By Allah, I had thought that, if there were another god besides Allah, he would surely have availed me something by now.”
He said, “Woe to you, Abū Sufyān! Has the time not yet come for you to know that I am the Messenger of Allah?”
He said, “May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! How forbearing, generous, and mindful of kinship ties you are! By Allah, I still had some reservation about this until now.” (1)
Al-ʿAbbās said, “Woe to you, Abū Sufyān! Embrace Islam and testify that there is no god worthy of worship but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, before your neck is struck.” So he bore the testimony of truth and embraced Islam. (2)
I said, “O Messenger of Allah, Abū Sufyān is a man who loves such distinction, so grant him something.” He said:
“Yes. Whoever enters the house of Abū Sufyān is safe; whoever shuts his door is safe; and whoever enters the mosque is safe.”
