Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

with me on this mule, and I will take you to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to seek safe-conduct for you.” He mounted behind me, while his two companions returned. I set off with him. (1) Whenever I passed by one of the Muslims’ fires, they would say, “Who is this?” But when they saw the Messenger of Allah’s mule, peace and blessings be upon him, they would say, “It is the Messenger of Allah’s uncle upon his mule.”

Eventually, I passed by the fire of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, may Allah be pleased with him. He said, “Who is this?” and came toward me. When he saw Abū Sufyān on the rear of the mount, he said, “Abū Sufyān, the enemy of Allah! Praise be to Allah, who has delivered you into my hands without any pact or covenant!” Then he rushed swiftly toward the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. I spurred the mule on and outstripped him by the margin by which a slow mount outstrips a slow man. (2)

I leapt down from the mule and entered upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. ʿUmar entered as well and said, “O Messenger of Allah, this is Abū Sufyān. Allah has delivered him into our hands without any pact or covenant, so let me strike off his neck.”

I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have granted him protection.” Then I sat beside the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took hold of his head, and said, “No, by Allah! No man but I shall speak privately with him tonight.” When ʿUmar pressed the matter repeatedly, I said, “Take it easy, ʿUmar! By Allah, had he been one of the men of Banū ʿAdī ibn Kaʿb, you would not have said this. But you know that he is one of the men of Banū ʿAbd Manāf!”

He said, “Take it easy, al-ʿAbbās! By Allah, your acceptance of Islam on the day you embraced Islam was dearer to me than the acceptance of Islam by al-Khaṭṭāb, had he embraced Islam. This is only because I knew that your acceptance of Islam was dearer to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, than al-Khaṭṭāb’s acceptance of Islam, had he embraced Islam.” Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

(1) This is the reading in the base text and in al-Majma'. In al-Sirah, it reads: “so I came with him.” Both readings are possible. (2) The base text and al-Majma' read: “the slow one.” The reading adopted here is that of al-Sirah and Tarikh Ibn Kathir.
