“I witnessed an occasion involving al-Miqdād ibn al-Aswad at Badr—while he was riding a horse of his—such that I would have preferred to have been present with him rather than to have had anything comparable to it. He came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was praying against the polytheists, and said: ‘We will not say to you as Moses’ people said to Moses: “Go, you and your Lord, and fight; indeed, we shall remain seated here.” Rather, we shall fight on your right and on your left, before you and behind you!’ I saw the Prophet’s face brighten, and he was delighted by it—that is, by his words.”
In another version: “Rather, proceed, and we are with you.”
It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (7/287 and 8/273)—whose wording is cited here, as are the additions, apart from the first addition and the other version; al-Nasāʾī in al-Sunan al-Kubrā (6/333/11140)—who includes the first addition and what follows it, and is alone in recording the other version; Ibn Saʿd in al-Ṭabaqāt (3/162)—with the first version; likewise al-Ḥākim (3/349), who authenticated it; and Aḥmad (1/390 and 428). Ibn Jarīr also narrated it in abbreviated form (6/115).
It has also been narrated that al-Miqdād, may Allah be pleased with him, said this on another occasion. Saʿīd reported from Qatādah, who said: “It was related to us that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to his Companions on the day of al-Ḥudaybiyah, when the polytheists prevented the sacrificial animals from reaching their destination and barred them from their rites:
‘I am going with the sacrificial animals, and I shall slaughter them at the House.’
Al-Miqdād ibn al-Aswad said to him: ‘By Allah, we shall not be like the leaders of the Children of Israel when they said to their prophet: “Go, you and your Lord, and fight; indeed, we shall remain seated here.” Rather, go, you and your Lord, and fight; we shall fight alongside you.’ When the Companions of the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, heard this, they followed suit.”
Al-Ṭabarī recorded it: Bishr narrated to us; Yazīd narrated to us; Saʿīd narrated to us.
