3336—“Say: ‘Glory be to Allah; praise be to Allah; there is no god worthy of worship but Allah; and Allah is Most Great.’ The Bedouin then counted them on his hand, finished, reflected, and returned. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—smiled and said, ‘The poor fellow has reflected.’
He then came and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, “Glory be to Allah; praise be to Allah; there is no god worthy of worship but Allah; and Allah is Most Great”—that is for Allah; so what is there for me?’ The Prophet said to him:
‘O Bedouin, when you say, “Glory be to Allah,” Allah says, “You have spoken the truth.” When you say, “Praise be to Allah,” Allah says, “You have spoken the truth.” When you say, “There is no god worthy of worship but Allah,” Allah says, “You have spoken the truth.” And when you say, “Allah is Most Great,” Allah says, “You have spoken the truth.”
‘And when you say, “O Allah, forgive me,” Allah says, “I have done so.” When you say, “O Allah, have mercy on me,” Allah says, “[Indeed,] I have done so.” And when you say, “O Allah, provide for me,” Allah says, “I have done so.”’ The Bedouin then counted seven on his hand and turned away.”
Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in Shuʿab al-Iman (1/431–432/619), through al-Hasan ibn Thawab, Abu ʿAli, who said: ʿAmmar ibn ʿUthman al-Halabi, Abu ʿUthman—whom Ahmad ibn Hanbal considered reliable, and regretted not having written anything from—narrated to me: Jaʿfar ibn Sulayman al-Dubaʿi narrated to me, from Thabit, from Anas, who said:
A Bedouin came to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and said, “O Messenger of Allah, teach me something good.” The Prophet took him by the hand and said: … Then he cited the hadith.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. Its narrators are reliable. As for those below al-Hasan ibn Thawab, they are reliable, well-known hadith masters; hence, I have not mentioned them.
As for al-Hasan ibn Tawwab, searching for him wore me out until I found him, so I prostrated to Allah
