Yazīd ibn ʿAbd al-Malik was al-Nawfalī. Al-Dhahabī said in al-Mughnī:
“Scholars are unanimously agreed upon his weakness.”
Second: Abū Bilāl al-Ashʿarī said: Al-Mufaḍḍal ibn Ṣadaqah, Abū Ḥammād al-Ḥanafī, narrated to us, from Abān ibn Abī ʿAyyāsh, from Abū Maʿshar al-Tamīmī, from Quzaʿah, the freedman of Ziyād, from Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī, attributed to the Prophet, like the hadith under discussion, adding:
“And Hajj expiates what precedes it until the next Hajj.”
Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (8/313/8016). Al-Haythamī said in al-Majmaʿ (2/300):
“It contains al-Mufaḍḍal ibn Ṣadaqah, who is abandoned as a hadith narrator.”
I say: The same applies to Abān ibn Abī ʿAyyāsh, as Aḥmad and others stated. Abū Bilāl al-Ashʿarī was deemed weak by al-Dāraquṭnī.
Third: Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb said: From ʿAbd Allāh ibn Qurayṭ, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who related that he heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say—mentioning only the phrase—in the wording:
“Fasting Ramadan until the next Ramadan is an expiation for what lies between them.”
Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (6/46–47). Al-Haythamī said (3/142): “It contains ʿAbd Allāh ibn Qurayṭ. Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned him and said: ‘Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb narrates from him,’ while the rest of its narrators are among those whose reports appear in the Ṣaḥīḥ collections.”
I say: Ibn Ḥibbān declared him reliable and authenticated one of his hadiths by including it in his Ṣaḥīḥ. Yet he is known only through this narration of Yaḥyā, as is explained in Taysīr al-Intifāʿ.
