3321 — “He would not pray in our blankets.”
It was recorded by the compilers of the Sunan and others. Its chain of transmission in Abu Dawud (645) is as follows: Ubayd Allah ibn Muʿadh related to us: My father related to us: al-Ashʿath related to us, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Shaqiq, from ʿA’ishah.
Al-Hakim recorded it by this route (1/252) and said:
“Authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim.”
Al-Dhahabi concurred with him.
I say: It is merely authentic, since al-Ashʿath—who is Ibn ʿAbd al-Malik al-Harrani—was not narrated from by Muslim, while al-Bukhari only cited him in a suspended form.
The others narrated it from him through other routes, some of which explicitly identify him as al-Harrani. It is also included in Sahih Abi Dawud (393).
Among those who authenticated the hadith was Ibn Hibban, who recorded it in his Sahih (4/38/2330—al-Ihsan), through his authentic chain from Ubayd Allah ibn ʿUmar al-Qawariri: Muʿadh ibn Muʿadh related it to us with the same chain. This is a strong corroboration by Ubayd Allah al-Qawariri of Ubayd Allah ibn Muʿadh al-ʿAnbari, in addition to other corroborating chains that will be mentioned, Allah Most High willing.
Al-Habbab ibn Muhammad, the father of al-Fadl Abu Khalifah, differed from them both in the chain of transmission and in the text. Ibn Hibban said (4/36/2324—al-Ihsan) and (106/350—al-Mawarid): Abu Khalifah informed us: My father related to us: Muʿadh ibn Muʿadh related to us: Ashʿath ibn Sawwar related to us, from Ibn Sirin ... with the wording:
“The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would pray in our blankets.”
