I say: Its chain is interrupted, for Abū Salamah—who was the son of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf—did not hear from his father. Its narrators have otherwise been declared reliable, apart from ʿAbdullāh ibn Shabīb, who was a historian and weak. However, Yaʿqūb ibn Muḥammad al-Zuhrī corroborated him: ʿUmar ibn Ṭalḥah al-Laythī narrated to us from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr al-Laythī, with the same report.
Ibn ʿAsākir recorded it in al-Tārīkh (10/132).
This al-Zuhrī was truthful, but frequently erred and narrated from weak transmitters, as stated in al-Taqrīb. As for his teacher, ʿUmar ibn Ṭalḥah al-Laythī, al-Dhahabī said in al-Mughnī:
“His status is unknown; yet Abū Ḥātim said: ‘His standing is one of truthfulness.’”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Taqrīb:
“Truthful.”
I say: The other route from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān to which al-Bazzār alluded apparently refers to the report of ʿAbdullāh ibn Jaʿfar from Umm Bakr: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf sold a piece of land to ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān for forty thousand dinars, and distributed it among the poor of Banū Zuhrah, the needy among the people, and the Mothers of the Believers. Al-Miswar said: “I entered upon ʿĀʾishah with her share of it, and she asked, ‘Who sent this?’ I said, ‘ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf.’ She said: ‘The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“None will show compassion to you after me except those who are patient.”
May Allah grant Ibn ʿAwf drink from Salsabīl, the spring of Paradise!
It was recorded by al-Ḥākim (3/310–311), Aḥmad (6/135), in al-Faḍāʾil (2/729/1249), Ibn Saʿd in al-Ṭabaqāt (3/132–133), al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ (10/52–53/9111, printed edition), and Ibn ʿAsākir in al-Tārīkh (10/131–132 and 132)
