Saʿd said: “I had left my brother, ʿUmayr, performing ablution, so I said, ‘It is ʿUmayr.’ But ʿAbdullāh ibn Salām came and ate it.”
It was recorded by Ibn Ḥibbān (9/148/7120), al-Ḥākim (3/416), Aḥmad (1/169), al-Bazzār in al-Baḥr (3/355/1156), and Abū Yaʿlā (2/75/721 and 98/754), through the route of Ḥammād ibn Salamah and others, from him. Al-Bazzār said:
“We know of no one who narrated it from Muṣʿab ibn Saʿd except ʿĀṣim; and more than one narrator transmitted it from ʿĀṣim.”
I say: ʿĀṣim’s retention has been subject to criticism. The conclusion reached by the scholars is that his hadith is good when he does not contradict others. Thus, if he retained it accurately, the hadith is good, and the incident occurred more than once: Muṣʿab narrated this account from his father, while his sister ʿĀʾishah narrated a similar account from their father. Al-Ḥākim and al-Dhahabī declared the chain of her brother’s report authentic. And Allah knows best. *
3318—“None will show compassion to you after me except those who are truthful and patient.”
It was recorded by al-Bazzār in his Musnad (3/210/2590—Kashf): ʿAbdullāh ibn Shabīb narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn Yazīd narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ṭalḥah al-Ṭawīl narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, from Abū Salamah, who said: ... ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say ...” Then he mentioned it.
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: “I sold something—which was specified—to ʿAbdullāh ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Sarḥ for forty thousand, and distributed it among them”—that is, among the wives of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him; may Allah have mercy on them.
Al-Bazzār said:
“It has been narrated from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān through another route, but we know of no route from him better than this.”
