“And let him wipe himself three times.”
It was also recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (no. 6624) and by al-Dūlābī in al-Kunā (1/26–27)—the wording being al-Dūlābī’s, since al-Ṭabarānī did not give the text of the report. It includes:
“...And when the two men go out together, they should separate. Neither of them should sit near his companion, nor should they speak to one another, for Allah detests that.”
With this addition, it is authentic, for it has a strong supporting report in the hadith of Jābir—may Allah be pleased with him—which was discussed under no. 3120.
Its chain here is weak because of Yazīd ibn Sinān al-Ruhāwī and his son.
The third route is narrated by Abū Ghassān Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Kinānī (the original reads: al-Kisāʾī!), who said: My father narrated to me, from Ibn Shihāb’s nephew, from Ibn Shihāb, who said: Khallād informed me (the original reads: Ibn Khallād) that his father heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say: ... He then narrated it as in the first report.
Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ (2/416–417/1717, Ṭ edition) and said:
“No one narrated it from al-Zuhrī except his nephew, and no one narrated it from al-Zuhrī’s nephew except Abū Ghassān (!). Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Naysābūrī was alone in narrating it.”
I say: Thus does the original read: “except Abū Ghassān!” The same is found in its photographed original (1/92/2) and in Majmaʿ al-Baḥrayn (1/297). This is an obvious error which the two annotators of the original and of al-Majmaʿ failed to notice. Its apparent meaning is that Abū Ghassān narrated it from al-Zuhrī’s nephew, whereas the chain shows that Abū Abī Ghassān—the father of Abū Ghassān—stands between them. He is the defect in the chain, and his name is Yaḥyā
