As for Ibn Ḥibbān, he listed him in al-Thiqāt (5/440)!
Nevertheless, the hadith is good, for I have found several supporting reports for it:
- On the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, attributed to the Prophet:
“I was weighed against all creation, and I outweighed them; then Abū Bakr was weighed …”
Ibn ʿAdī related it in al-Kāmil (6/325–326) through Maʿrūf ibn Abī Maʿrūf al-Balkhī: Jarīr narrated to us; Layth narrated to us, from Mujāhid, from him.
This chain of transmission is weak. Layth is Ibn Abī Sulaym, whose memory had become confused. This Maʿrūf is unknown—he is not well known—as Ibn ʿAdī said.
- On the authority of Abū Umāmah, attributed to the Prophet:
“A pan of a balance was brought, and I was placed in it; my community was placed in another pan, and I outweighed it; then Abū Bakr was brought …” The hadith.
Aḥmad related it in al-Musnad (5/259) and in al-Faḍāʾil (1/194–196), and al-Khaṭīb transmitted it from him in al-Tārīkh (14/78), through Muṭarriḥ ibn Yazīd, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Zaḥr, from ʿAlī ibn Yazīd, from al-Qāsim, from him.
I say: This is a weak chain of transmission, composed entirely of weak narrators: ʿAlī ibn Yazīd—who is al-Alhānī—and the two narrators below him. Al-ʿIrāqī declared it weak in al-Mughnī (4/359).
Al-Ṭabarānī also related it (8/254–255) through Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-ʿArzamī, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Zaḥr, with the same chain. Al-ʿArzamī is abandoned.
