He then narrated it through an authentic chain to Abu al-Bakhtari, who related a similar report from Hudhayfah, which includes:
A man said, “Will there be monkeys and swine among us?” He replied, “What makes you think that you will be spared that—may you be bereft of your mother?!”
‘Abd al-Razzaq recorded in his al-Musannaf (11/369/20765), through Qatadah, that Hudhayfah said:
“You will most certainly follow the ways of the Children of Israel, feather for feather and sandal-strap for sandal-strap, such that if a man among the Children of Israel did such and such, a man from this ummah would do the same.” A man said to him, “There were monkeys and swine among the Children of Israel?!” He replied, “This ummah will also have monkeys and swine.”
Its narrators are trustworthy, but its chain is interrupted.
The second report is from Sahl ibn Sa‘d, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, you will most certainly follow the ways of those before you, sandal for sandal.”
Al-Tabarani recorded it (6/251/6017) through Ibn Lahi‘ah, who said: Bakr ibn Sawadah narrated to me from him.
Its narrators are trustworthy. Yahya ibn Ishaq al-Saylahini—one of Ibn Lahi‘ah’s early students—narrated it from Ibn Lahi‘ah.
Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr definitively attributed it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in al-Tamhid (5/45), apparently on account of its corroborating reports.
Ahmad also recorded it through this route (5/340), with the wording:
“By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, you will most certainly follow the ways of those before you, like for like.”
