I say: This is a good chain of transmission, despite the weakness of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ, the scribe of al-Layth. However, al-Ḥāfiẓ concluded from the statements of the imams regarding him that reports transmitted from him by highly proficient scholars, such as Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn, al-Bukhārī, Abū Zurʿah, and Abū Ḥātim, are among his authentic hadiths. This is one of al-Bukhārī’s reports from him.
It is corroborated. Aḥmad (4/106) said: Abū al-Mughīrah narrated to us; al-Awzāʿī narrated to us; Usayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to me; Ṣāliḥ ibn Muḥammad narrated to me; Abū Jumʿah narrated to me, saying:
“We ate breakfast with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrāḥ was with us. He said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, is anyone better than us? We embraced Islam with you and strove in jihad with you.’ He said...”
He then mentioned it in abbreviated form, with the wording: “There will be people after you who believe in me without having seen me.”
Al-Ḥākim (4/85) and al-Ṭabarānī also recorded it through this route.
Abū Yaʿlā recorded it in his Musnad (3/128), as did Ibn ʿAsākir through other routes from al-Awzāʿī with it. Al-Ḥākim said, “Its chain is authentic,” and al-Dhahabī concurred with him; and it is as they said. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said (7/6), “Its chain is good.”
Usayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān had another shaykh as well. Usayd said: From Khālid ibn Durayk, from Abū Muḥayriz, who said: I said to Abū Jumʿah—a Companion—“Relate to us a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.” He replied, “Yes, I shall relate to you a fine hadith...” Then he mentioned it.
Aḥmad recorded it, as did al-Dārimī in his Sunan (2/308). Both said: Abū al-Mughīrah narrated to us:
