the other man?” I said, “No.” He said, “It was ʿAli.” ʿAʾishah—may Allah be pleased with her—would relate that, after the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had entered her house and his illness had become severe, he said: … and he then mentioned it (1). He was seated in a basin belonging to Hafsah, the Prophet’s wife, and we began pouring over him water from those waterskins until he began gesturing to us, saying, “You have done so.” He then went out to the people.
Muslim also narrated it (2/20–21), as did al-Bukhari (687), in abbreviated form, through Musa ibn Abi ʿAʾishah, from ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUtbah, from ʿAʾishah, within the same account and with similar wording. However, he confined himself to the Prophet’s saying, peace and blessings be upon him:
“Put water in the basin for me.”
The second route: from ʿUrwah:
Ibn Hibban (6599), al-Hakim (1/145), Ibn Khuzaymah (258), al-Nasaʾi in al-Sunan al-Kubra (7082), al-Darimi (1/38), ʿAbd al-Razzaq (179), Abu Yaʿla (4770), al-Tabarani in al-Awsat (6714), and Ibn ʿAdi in al-Kamil (6/2438) narrated it through three routes from ʿUrwah, from ʿAʾishah, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording:
“Pour …”
Ibn Khuzaymah (258), Ibn Hibban (6596 and 6600), Ahmad (6/155 and 228), and al-Bayhaqi (1/31) also narrated it through routes from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhri, from ʿUrwah—or from ʿAmrah—from ʿAʾishah, attributed to the Prophet, with uncertainty.
