and Ibn Saʿd and Ibn Jarir said—as reported by al-Mizzi in Tahdhib al-Kamal (14/131). Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in al-Taqrib: “Trustworthy; though he sometimes erred.” This is a manifest mistake on his part. And Allah Most High knows best. *
- “I know of a statement which, if he were to say it, would remove what he is experiencing: ‘I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.’”
It has been narrated on the authority of Sulayman ibn Surad, Muʿadh, Ibn Masʿud, and Ubayy ibn Kaʿb.
As for the hadith of Sulayman ibn Surad:
It was narrated by al-Bukhari in his Sahih (3282, 6048, and 6115), and in al-Adab al-Mufrad (434); Muslim in his Sahih (8/31); Ibn Abi Shaybah (8/533 and 10/349–350); Ahmad (6/394); Abu Dawud (4781); al-Nasaʾi in ʿAmal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah (392 and 393); Ibn Hibban (5692); al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (6488 and 6489); al-Baghawi in Sharh al-Sunnah (1333); and Ibn Abi ʿAsim in al-Ahad wa al-Mathani (2349 and 2350), through several routes from al-Aʿmash, who said: I heard ʿAdi ibn Thabit say: Sulayman ibn Surad narrated to us, saying:
Two men exchanged insults in the presence of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and one of them began to grow angry, his face turning red. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, looked at him and said … then he mentioned it.
He said: A man among those who had heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then went up to the man and said, “Do you know what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said just now?” He said … then he mentioned it.
The man replied, “Do you take me for mad?!”
