The second: from ʿAmr ibn Abī ʿAmr, from al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥanṭab, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
Ibn Ḥibbān recorded it (1311).
I say: Its narrators are trustworthy, except that this al-Muṭṭalib frequently practised concealment in transmission, as stated in al-Taqrīb, and he related it using an ambiguous “from” formula.
Its first portion has a third chain from Abū Hurayrah, transmitted by Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān, from al-Qaʿqāʿ ibn Ḥakīm, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from him.
Al-Dārimī recorded it (2/323), as did Ibn Abī Shaybah (12/12/1), Aḥmad (2/527), al-Ṭabarānī in Mukhtaṣar Makārim al-Akhlāq (1/110/2), and al-Ḥākim (1/3). Al-Ḥākim said: “Authentic according to the criteria of Muslim.” Al-Dhahabī agreed with him.
I say: It is good as well, for Muslim narrated from Ibn ʿAjlān only as corroboration, and there is some criticism of him.
It also has a fourth, mursal chain. Ibn Abī Shaybah (12/188/2) said: Ibn ʿUlayyah narrated from Yūnus, from al-Ḥasan, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. He then mentioned the hadith.
I say: This is a mursal narration with an authentic chain of transmission.
The hadith also has a supporting narration from ʿĀʾishah, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the wording:
“Indeed, among the believers with the most complete faith are those with the finest character and those who are kindest to their families.”
Al-Tirmidhī recorded it (2/102), as did al-Ḥākim (1/53) and Aḥmad (6/47, 99), through Abū Qilābah, from her.
