“Rūḥ ibn Ghutayf al-Thaqafī narrated from ʿUmar ibn Muṣʿab, and Muḥammad ibn Rabīʿah narrated from him; he is rejected in hadith.”
He then cited for him the hadith of the dirham through the route of al-Qāsim ibn Mālik, from him, from al-Zuhrī, with its chain previously mentioned in al-Ḍaʿīfah (148). In al-Bukhārī’s version, his name appears as: “Rūḥ ibn Ghutayf ibn Abī Sufyān al-Thaqafī.” This is likewise how his biographical entry appears in Ibn Ḥibbān’s al-Ḍuʿafāʾ (1/298). As for Ibn Abī Ḥātim, he said:
“Rūḥ ibn Ghutayf ibn Aʿyan al-Jazarī narrated from al-Zuhrī and ʿAmr—thus [written]—ibn Muṣʿab ibn al-Zubayr. ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Ḥarb, al-Qāsim ibn Mālik al-Muzanī, and Muḥammad ibn Rabīʿah narrated from him. I heard my father say this, and he would say: He is not strong; he is very rejected in hadith.”
Thus, he named his grandfather “Aʿyan al-Jazarī.” I do not know whether this is preserved, for I have not seen it mentioned by anyone else; nor have I seen his statement, “ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Ḥarb ... narrated from him,” elsewhere. The remainder agrees with what is found in al-Bukhārī and others.
I then found the hadith of the dirham in al-Dāraqutnī’s al-ʿIlal (8/43–44), through the route of al-Qāsim ibn Mālik referred to above, from Rūḥ ibn Ghutayf, with the same chain. He then mentioned that Asad ibn ʿAmr al-Bajalī contradicted him, saying: “From Ghutayf.” Al-Dāraqutnī said:
“He is Rūḥ ibn Ghutayf, as al-Qāsim ibn Mālik said, and Rūḥ is weak.”
I say: This provides strong evidence that the narrator of the hadith of the dirham was in fact Rūḥ ibn Ghutayf, not Ghutayf ibn Aʿyan; that Rūḥ himself is weak; and that Asad ibn ʿAmr erred when he called him “Ghutayf” instead of “Rūḥ.” Al-Dāraqutnī explicitly stated this in al-Sunan (1/401), saying after the aforementioned narration of al-Qāsim ibn Mālik:
