- “The comfort of my eyes has been placed in prayer.”
Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (20/420/1012): Ḥafṣ ibn ʿUmar al-Ruqqī and Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Kaysān al-Miṣīṣī both narrated to us, saying: Abū Ḥudhayfah narrated to us; Sufyān narrated from Ziyād ibn ʿIlāqah, from al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: … and he then cited it.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. Abū Ḥudhayfah’s name was Mūsā ibn Masʿūd. The hadith master said: “He was truthful but poor in retention, and was prone to textual errors. Al-Bukhārī included his hadith in corroborative narrations.”
Al-Dhahabī said in al-Mīzān:
“He was truthful, Allah willing, but he made mistakes. Aḥmad spoke critically of him, al-Tirmidhī declared him weak, and Ibn Khuzaymah said: ‘I do not cite him as evidence …’”
I say: However, it has a strong corroborating report, narrated by Yaḥyā ibn ʿUthmān al-Ḥarbī: Hīqil ibn Ziyād narrated to us, from al-Awzāʿī, from Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Ṭalḥah, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: … and he then cited it.
It was narrated by al-ʿUqaylī (4/420), al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ (5772), and in al-Muʿjam al-Ṣaghīr (p. 153, Hind edition); and through the latter route, by al-Khaṭīb in al-Tārīkh (12/371 and 14/190).
This is an authentic chain of transmission; all its narrators are trustworthy. It has been criticized on grounds that do not impair it, as was established earlier under nos. 1107 and 1809. I have only repeated it here as corroboration for the hadith of Abū Ḥudhayfah.
The hadith has also been reported from Anas through another route, in a more complete wording than that found here. It has been cited in al-Mishkāh (5261) and al-Rawḍ al-Naḍīr, no. 53.
