behind the house of Ḥammād ibn Zayd—narrated to us: al-Jurayrī, from Abū Naḍrah, from him, that whenever he saw young men, he would say: “Welcome, O charge of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He commanded us to preserve the hadith for you and to make room for you in our gatherings.”
Al-Rāmahurmuzī recorded it, as did al-Ḥāfiẓ al-ʿAlāʾī through his route. He said: “I have not identified this Abū ʿAbd Allāh.”
However, the hadith has two other chains from Abū Saʿīd:
- From Abū Khālid, the client of Ibn al-Ṣabāḥ al-Asadī, from him, that he would say: “Welcome, O charge of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,” whenever they came to him seeking knowledge.
Al-Rāmahurmuzī recorded it, but I have not identified this Abū Khālid.
- From Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, from him with the same wording, with the addition: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: ‘People will come to you seeking religious understanding, so instruct them in it and teach them well.’”
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb recorded it in al-Musnad (8/167/2), and ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Maqdisī in The Book of Knowledge (50/1), through Ibn Zahr, from Layth ibn Abī Sulaym, from Shahr.
I say: This is a weak chain, composed throughout of weak narrators: Shahr and those below him. Yet it is in better condition than the hadith of Abū Hārūn al-ʿAbdī to which reference has already been made in al-Ḥākim’s remarks. Ibn Maʿīn likewise stated this. In al-Muntakhab, it reads:
“From Ibrāhīm ibn al-Junayd, who said: The hadith of Abū Hārūn was mentioned to Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn, and he said: ‘Layth ibn Abī Sulaym narrated it from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, from Abū Saʿīd, similarly.’
Yaḥyā was asked: ‘Is this also weak, like Abū Hārūn?’ He replied: ‘No; this is stronger and better than that. Ibn Abī Maryam narrated it to us from Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb, from Layth.’”
