I say: He means the version narrated by the two Shaykhs through Yunus, from Ibn Shihab: “ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbd Allah told me that his father, ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUtbah, wrote to ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Arqam al-Zuhri, instructing him to visit Subayʿah bint al-Harith al-Aslamiyyah and ask her about her account and what the Messenger of Allah said to her when she sought his legal ruling. So ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd Allah wrote to ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUtbah, informing him that Subayʿah had told him that she…”
I say: He then mentioned the hadith in a more complete form, but it does not contain the words, “Abu al-Sanabil has spoken falsely.” It has been cited in Jilbab al-Marʾah al-Muslimah (p. 69) and in al-Irwaʾ (7/192), through another chain.
Al-Bayhaqi then narrated it (10/709) through Muhammad, and Ahmad (1/447) through Khallas, both from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUtbah: that Subayʿah bint al-Harith gave birth … the hadith. Al-Bayhaqi said:
“This is a good mursal report, and it has corroborating reports.”
Muhammad is Ibn Sirin; al-Bayhaqi narrated it through Ayyub from him.
Mansur also narrated it from Ibn Sirin, but he said, “Subayʿah …” the hadith, without mentioning ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUtbah in its chain of transmission.
Saʿid ibn Mansur also narrated it (1508), and its chain is likewise an authentic mursal chain.
It has another corroborating report in the mursal narration of al-Hasan al-Basri. ʿAbd ibn Humayd narrated it, as cited in al-Durr al-Manthur (6/236).
Among its corroborating reports is the hadith of ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿud that Subayʿah bint al-Harith gave birth
