280 — “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to commend you to our care”—that is, the students of hadith.
Tamām recorded it in al-Fawāʾid (1/4/2, in the copy of al-Ḥāfiẓ ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Maqdisī), through ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Maṣṣīṣī; and Abū Bakr ibn Abī ʿAlī in al-Arbaʿīn (folio 117/1), through Mūsā ibn Hārūn; and al-Rāmahurmuzī in al-Fāṣil bayna al-Rāwī wa-l-Wāʿī (folio 5/2)—and from him, al-ʿAlāʾī in Bughyat al-Multamis (2/2)—through Ibn Ishkāb; and al-Ḥākim (1/88), through al-Qāsim ibn Mughīrah al-Jawharī and Ṣāliḥ ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥabīb al-Ḥāfiẓ. All of them narrated from Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān—Mūsā ibn Hārūn, al-Jawharī, and Ṣāliḥ added: al-Wāsiṭī—who said: ʿAbbād ibn al-ʿAwwām narrated to us, from al-Jurayrī, from Abū Naḍrah, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said: “Welcome to those whom the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, commended to our care. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to...” Then he mentioned the hadith.
Al-Ḥākim said: “This is an authentic, firmly established hadith, since the two Shaykhs relied upon Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān, ʿAbbād ibn al-ʿAwwām, and then al-Jurayrī; and Muslim also relied upon the hadiths of Abū Naḍrah. I have counted eleven reports of al-Jurayrī in al-Musnad al-Ṣaḥīḥ. Yet they did not record this hadith, which is the first hadith concerning the virtue of the students of hadith. No hidden defect is known in it. Hadith scholars have collected chains for this hadith from Abū Hārūn al-ʿAbdī, from Abū Saʿīd; and Abū Hārūn is among those concerning whom they remained silent.”
Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. Al-ʿAlāʾī said after it: “Its chain of transmission is acceptable, for this Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān is al-Nashīṭī. He has a degree of weakness that is tolerable; Abū Zurʿah and Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī, among others, narrated from him.”
I say: He is not al-Nashīṭī, for several reasons:
