Al-Ṭabarī also recorded it at length through this route (16/91).
I found a corroborating chain for it: Yūsuf ibn al-ʿAnbas al-Yamanī narrated it to us from ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmār, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Al-Aṣbahānī recorded it in al-Targhīb (1/314/713).
I say: ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmār is weak in his reports from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, and I could not find a biographical notice for Yūsuf ibn al-ʿAnbas al-Yamanī.
A report was also narrated from Ibn Masʿūd, at the end of the hadith, “Indeed, Allah has apportioned your characters among you ...,” similar to the hadith cited in the heading, with the addition:
“For they go before one, ward off harm, and follow after one; and they are the enduring righteous deeds.”
Al-Bayhaqī recorded it in Shuʿab al-Īmān (1/426), through al-Ḥākim (1/34). This addition, however, is not found in his version, and its chain contains someone whom I do not recognize. A narrator has been omitted from al-Bayhaqī’s chain and should be restored from al-Mustadrak. Without this addition, its chain is authentic; it was previously referenced under no. (2714).
A report from Ibn ʿAbbās is narrated by Ismāʿīl ibn Ṣāliḥ ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās: “My father Ṣāliḥ narrated to me; my father narrated to me; ʿAlī narrated to me; my father ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās narrated to me, saying: ‘I was with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace ...’” The hadith is similar to the lengthy hadith of Abū al-Dardāʾ.
Ibn ʿAsākir recorded it in Tārīkh Dimashq (2/841), in the biographical entry of this Ismāʿīl. He mentioned nothing in his entry to indicate his standing as a transmitter, nor did I find any mention of him in any
