The wording is Aḥmad’s; ʿAffān’s addition is found in al-Nasāʾī, and the other narration is al-Ṭabarānī’s. Their chain of transmission is authentic, and all its narrators are trustworthy. Al-Haythamī said in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid (7/182):
“Ahmad narrated it through several chains, one of which is this one, and it is with a continuous chain … Al-Ṭabarānī also narrated it, and the narrators of both are trustworthy.”
The meeting of spirits is supported by a corroborating report from Ibn ʿAmr, attributed to the Prophet; it is cited, with an additional wording, in the author’s other book under no. 1947.
Note: The expression li-talqa (“surely meets”) appears in this form in al-Nasāʾī, as well as in al-Muṣannaf. In Ibn Saʿd and Aḥmad, however, it appears as lā yalqā (“does not meet”), in the negative form. I believe this to be a textual corruption, since it conflicts with the context and with the corroborating report mentioned above.
When al-Haythamī cited it as narrated by Aḥmad, he gave it correctly. The same is found in Kanz al-ʿUmmāl (15/517/42017), as narrated by Ibn Abī Shaybah and Abū Nuʿaym. And Allah knows best.
The hadith has also been narrated from Khuzaymah with the wording: “Your dream has been confirmed.” It is cited in al-Mishkāh (4624). *
3263—([Those who have incurred wrath] are the Jews, and [those who have gone astray] are the Christians.)
It has been reported in hadiths from ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim al-Ṭāʾī, may Allah be pleased with him; from one who heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him; and from Abū Dharr.
- As for the hadith of ʿAdī, it has two routes:
The first: Sammāk ibn Ḥarb said: “I heard ʿAbbād ibn Ḥubaysh narrating from ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim with this report.”
It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (2956 and 2957), Ibn Ḥibbān (5/171 and 2279), and Ibn Jarīr
