In sum, I consider the hadith authentic on account of these chains taken together. Its authenticity was also indicated by Abd al-Haqq al-Ishbili in al-Ahkam al-Kubra, no. 63 in my copy, through his silence regarding it, as he explicitly stated in the introduction. And Allah knows best.
279 — “The Hour will not come until people build houses and adorn them with the ornamentation of al-marāḥil.”
Al-Bukhari narrated it in al-Adab al-Mufrad (no. 777): Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir narrated to us: Ibn Abi Fudayk narrated to us, from Abd Allah ibn Abi Yahya, from Sa‘id ibn Abi Hind, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it.
I say: This is an authentic chain; all of its narrators are trustworthy and are among al-Bukhari’s narrators in his Sahih, apart from Abd Allah ibn Abi Yahya. He is Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Yahya al-Aslami, and there is unanimous agreement that he is trustworthy.
Al-marāḥil was explained by Ibrahim, al-Bukhari’s teacher, as striped garments. In al-Nihayah, it says: “A marḥal is a garment upon which patterns resembling saddles have been inscribed. From this comes the hadith: ‘He would pray wearing one of these marḥalāt,’ meaning patterned woolen wraps. Its plural is al-marāḥil. From this also comes this hadith: ‘They adorn them with the ornamentation of al-marāḥil.’ This type of ornamentation is called tarḥīl.”
